What Is Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day?

Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day is an annual community event, hosted by the Baby Like Me Project, that gifts Black dolls to young girls across Ghana. The most recent Doll Day in Cape Coast, supported by Jack and Jill of America and the Jack and Jill Mid-Atlantic Region, gave out more than 75 dolls in a single afternoon.

Suitcases that had crossed the Atlantic arrived packed with those 75-plus dolls, every one of them picked out in advance. Nothing about it was random every doll was chosen with a specific child in mind.

For a lot of the girls there, it was the first doll they'd ever held that actually looked like them.

"For a lot of little girls, it was the first time they'd held a doll that looked like them."

Watching that moment happen in person is hard to describe. A kid opens a bag, sees a doll with her own skin tone and her own hair, and something shifts on her face. No speech required the doll does the talking.

The Baby Like Me Project: Where the Idea Came From

The Baby Like Me Project gives Black baby dolls to girls across Ghana, and it started with founder Maurice Cheetham noticing a young girl carrying a white doll. That one detail stuck with him what it said about which dolls were available to her, and which weren't. He built the Baby Like Me Project around a simple fix: give girls dolls that actually reflect who they are.

Since then, the Baby Like Me Project has grown well past a single event. It now partners with sororities, community organizations like Jack and Jill of America, and even local palaces to run Doll Days across the country.

Jack and Jill of America's Role in Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day

None of this happens without people willing to pack suitcases, coordinate with local partners, and actually show up. Jack and Jill of America Inc. has been one of the organizations behind that effort, and their involvement fits naturally with the group's long track record of programming built around Black youth development and cultural pride.

Dr. Pia Duncan, an executive officer with the Jack and Jill Mid-Atlantic Region, was one of the first to get behind the Cape Coast event when it came up. She didn't need much convincing.

Joshua Fynnerbrl noted that Jack and Jill's support extended beyond financial contributions, highlighting the dedication of Jack and Jill Mothers in delivering dolls to Ghana and volunteering to focus the event on the girls present.

This kind of support matters more than it might look like from the outside. Representation at this age has real effects on how girls see themselves and aqffects their confidence, how they carry themselves, how they show up in school and eventually in leadership. A group like Jack and Jill of America choosing to back a project like this is choosing to invest directly in that, and it's the kind of commitment the Jack and Jill Mid-Atlantic Region chapter has leaned into.

Inside a Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day Event

Doll Day itself moves fast. Girls line up, dolls come out of the suitcases one by one, and within minutes the room is full of kids hugging their new dolls and comparing hairstyles with each other. Volunteers from Jack and Jill of America and the Baby Like Me Project spend the day matching kids to dolls, answering questions, and just being present for a moment that, for a lot of these girls, doesn't happen very often. Several members traveled in specifically through the Jack and Jill Mid-Atlantic Region chapter to be part of it.

Dr. Pia Anderson Duncan emphasized the involvement and support of the Jack and Jill Mid Atlantic Chapter, along with the participation of sister chapters. She also expressed her delight at being there and was pleased to see that the girls were enjoying themselves.

Small Gesture, Bigger Connection

A doll handed over in an afternoon doesn't have to stop being useful the moment the event ends. These trips build real relationships between diaspora communities including chapters like the Jack and Jill Mid-Atlantic Region and the girls of Cape Coast, some of whom will grow into Ghana's next generation of women leaders. What starts as a doll can turn into something longer: continued involvement, mentorship, or just an ongoing connection between two communities.

That's the piece that's easy to miss if you only look at the dolls themselves. The gift is the doorway. What organizations like Jack and Jill of America Inc. are really building through Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day is a relationship that outlasts the afternoon.

Why Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day Is Worth Supporting

By the end of the day, a suitcase of dolls turns into something bigger than a toy drive. It's a message to a new generation of Ghanaian girls: beauty comes in their own image, not someone else's.

"A reminder to a new generation of Ghanaian girls that beauty comes in their own image."

For community organizations weighing where to put their time and resources, Ghana Baby Like Me Doll Day is a pretty clear case for getting involved. It doesn't take much to run a partner organization, a shipment of dolls, and a group of people willing to show up but the payoff, watching a room full of girls see themselves reflected for the first time, is hard to match. Jack and Jill of America's Mid-Atlantic Region has already shown what that kind of involvement can look like, and there's plenty of room for other chapters and organizations to follow.
