ACCRA, Ghana – Plans for an Accra–Omaha sister city agreement moved a step forward this week when Tiffany Gamble, a representative of Omaha Sister Cities International, paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey.

The meeting focused on preparations to host the Omaha, Nebraska delegation, which will travel to Accra next March to coincide with Ghana's Independence Day celebrations. During the visit, the delegation is expected to sign a sister city agreement with the City of Accra, formally linking the two cities. The group will be hosted by African Roots Travel, a Ghana-based heritage and diaspora travel company.

Delegation Highlights: Signing, State Dinner, Grand Durbar and Library Donation

Highlights of the delegation's visit will include the sister city signing, a state dinner, and a Grand Durbar. The delegation will also visit the newly renovated Akoto Lante Library on Bannerman Road in Accra to donate books and equipment, an effort led by Hon. Carlos Nii Ayaa Mankattan, Assemblyman for the Kinka Electoral Area.

What an Accra–Omaha Sister City Partnership Could Mean

Gamble used the visit to introduce Omaha Sister Cities International and to outline the delegation's plans. She also discussed how the two cities might work together once the agreement is in place. Sister city partnerships typically promote cultural exchange, educational ties, tourism, and economic cooperation, and the meeting offered an early opportunity to align expectations on both sides.

Hon. Allotey welcomed the proposal and expressed enthusiasm about hosting the delegation, according to those present.

Diaspora Bridge Consulting Calls for Action

Maurice Cheetham of Diaspora Bridge Consulting, who attended the meeting, said he was impressed by the Mayor's openness. "I was very impressed with the Mayor's receptive attitude and outlook," Cheetham said. "My hope is that we see real action come out of this, so that the agreement leads to tangible results for both cities."

Cheetham's comments reflect a wider interest among diaspora and community organizations in turning ceremonial agreements into lasting programs. Diaspora Bridge Consulting provides on-the-ground support to clients navigating Ghana and is assisting with logistics for the delegation's visit.

Next Steps for the Omaha Delegation's Ghana Visit

With the delegation's arrival still several months away, organizers say the coming weeks will go toward finalizing the program, coordinating with city officials, and planning the signing ceremony.
